About this print
Lehua ʻAlani
Lehua ʻAlani rounds out our trifecta of ʻōhiʻa prints. Like its red and yellow counterparts, lehua ʻalani is a variation of the endemic ʻōhiʻa plant, a keystone species in many of Hawaiʻi’s native forests and a cultural staple. Blossoms of the ʻōhiʻa, known as “lehua,” are usually red but can also be pale yellow, pink, orange or burgundy. Lehua ʻalani is comparatively rare in the wild but thanks to native plant nurseries, this variation is more commonly seen today.
Some variations of lehua can be bi-colored. Stories also tell us of a pure white variation of lehua, known as lehua kea or lehua haʻakea, although we have not seen hard evidence confirming its existence today.
For more information on ʻōhiʻa, see the print descriptions for Lehua Mamo and Lehua ʻUla.
This print was created in partnership with Kaille Harris, an incredibly talented watercolor and digital artist and owner of Under the Moon.
